Curtin Centre for Regional Education

Esperance, Western Australia

Esperance is set on the 'Bay of Isles'', the beautiful Archipelago of the Recherche. It is the regional centre for the south east of Western Australia, with an active port facility. The town is some 720 kilometres from the capital city of Perth, 380 kilometres south of the mining centre of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

While the views are great in Esperance, the town is based on supporting a solid foundation of resource industries - broad acre farming (cereal crops, beef and sheep) and in recent years the Port has grown to now export iron ore from mines at Koolyanobbing and Ravensthorpe.

The Shire of Esperance covers some 2,843 hectares and has a population of around 15,000. Great beaches and clear water attract many tourists (including fishers) to Esperance throughout the year.

Esperance Community Education Campus

Curtin in Esperance is part of an exciting project that has seen the formation of the Esperance Community Education Campus, a federation between Curtin University of Technology, Esperance Senior High School and its Education Support Centre, and the Esperance Residential College.

A jointly used facility has been created combining a library and information service and flexible learning telecommunications technologies. Seminar rooms, tutorial rooms, video conferencing and a computer lab with 24 hour access are available at the Library and Learning Centre.

History of the Centre for Regional Education in Esperance

Undergraduate studies in Esperance prior to 2000 were limited. Curtin offered a Foundation Studies Enabling Program for Rural and Isolated Students and some units of the Associate Degree in Art.

Six students commenced the Bachelor of Education in 2000 as internal students. Eight BEd students will be graduating in 2006, and there are 12 students in first year in 2006.

Since 2000 the Centre for Regional Education has expanded to offer the following courses at Esperance:

In 2007, we began offering two new programs - the UniReady Program for bridging and enabling options, and the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education.

Classes are small and delivery incorporates a variety of modes from traditional settings to technology assisted.
