Karratha, Western Australia
Established to service the expanding accommodation needs of the local mining industry, the township of Karratha is situated on Nickol Bay approximately 1,500 km north of Perth.
With its port town, Dampier (looking over the Dampier Archipelago), the Karratha township serves as home to 10,500 people. First constructed in the late sixties, major resource developments have contributed to rapid growth in each of Karratha's residential, educational, service and industrial sectors. It is planned that the town will eventually house over 30,000 people.
The main industries are iron ore processing and export, salt production from extensive evaporation ponds for export, shipping of manganese and other minerals.
